Welcome to the weekly update!
The next Board of Education meeting is Tuesday, February 7th – and the agenda packed!
During the meeting the District will submit the new Mission and Belief Statements, which include revisions based on stakeholder feedback, to the Board of Education for adoption.
We will also be sharing the draft of the District’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan. This is a plan by Williamsville, for Williamsville. After sharing the draft DEI plan, we will be opening a 30-day comment period for stakeholders to submit feedback.
As we celebrate the 130th Anniversary of the District, as part of our rebranding efforts, the District Logo-Subcommittee will also be presenting the final two designs for consideration as the next District logo. All school community members will then have the opportunity to vote for the next logo until March 10th! It has been incredible to see the progress the Logo-Subcommittee has made to create a simple, identifiable, and modern new logo for the District. Once the vote closes, we will reveal the new District logo during the Community Forum on March 28th!
February is Black History Month, and this week we are highlighting the accomplishments and legacy of Matthew Henson, an explorer who was the first to reach the geographic North Pole. As a lead member of the expedition crew tasked with finding the North Pole, at the time of their achievement in 1909, as an African-American Henson wasn’t given was given little recognition as the first explorer to reach the North Pole. It would take more than 20 years for him to be recognized as the first man to stand on top of the world.
Be sure to check out the video project detailing Matthew Henson’s legacy in the weekly newsletter and on the District’s YouTube channel!
I want to give a special shoutout to Cobraz – a student led band at Williamsville North High School. The group, which is made up of current and former Spartans, composed the song “Snakebite,” submitted it to the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame for their annual songwriting contest, and won the Lucille and Jack Yellen Foundation Songwriter’s Scholarship, which includes a mentoring conference with several Buffalo Music Hall of Fame inductees! We caught up with the band to ask them about their inspiration for the song – take a listen!
Congratulations and well done Cobraz!
Finally, the Mid-Winter Recess is February 20th through February 24th. While there is no school that week, there is a fun opportunity to build relationships and have some fun with the Amherst Police Department! On Tuesday, February 21st, APD will be hosting Game Day at Transit Middle School from 10 a.m. to noon. Come out and play some games in the gym and interact with APD! We are thankful for the incredible partnership we have with Amherst and look forward to this event!
We know the temps are low – so please, stay warm and safe this weekend. We’ll see you next week!
