Welcome to the Weekly Update!

As we shared last week and again during the Board of Education meeting this week, there is a lot happening in the District over the next month!

First, as part of our rebranding efforts, the District-wide logo vote is now open!  Nick Filipowski, the District’s Director of Communications, presented the final two logo designs the District’s Logo Subcommittee created for consideration by our school community.  Voting will close on Friday, March 10th and all stakeholders are able to participate and share in this process.

Parents, students, faculty and staff will be able to cast their votes through WITS, while community members who do not have WITS are to come to the District Office and vote securely.  Full details on the logo designs and the presentation are available on the District website and in the weekly newsletter!

Next, the draft version of the District’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan is also available for the school community to review and share feedback on the District’s website.  The comment period will be open until Thursday, March 9th.  If you would like to provide feedback, please e-mail contact@williamsvillek12.org and include “DEI Plan” in the subject line.

To help inform and educate our school community, the DEI plan also includes a glossary of terms, along with an addendum that features the Call to Action from the New York State Education Department, the New York State Board of Regents Policy on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, and the New York State Education Department’s Culturally Responsive-Sustaining Education Framework.

We look forward to receiving your feedback.

I also want to share that the Speaker Series on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion will take place on Thursday, March 2nd at Transit Middle School.

As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, this week we highlight the life of Harriet Tubman, who helped lead slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad.  During the American Civil War, she also served as a spy for the Union Army and is considered the first African-American woman to serve in the military. Be sure to checkout the video project on her life in the weekly newsletter and on the District’s YouTube Channel.

I want to give a special shout out to the 4th grade Student Council at Country Parkway Elementary School.  These students presented to myself and the Board of Education on their mission and values for the 2022-2023 school year.  They also shared a list of activities they’d like to do, to continue to build a strong school community.  Some of the events include a movie night, bike rodeo, and their heritage night, which took place last week!  They did an amazing job and have shown the true spirit of unity.

Finally, as we wrap up another week of school, I want to share the winners of the PTA Reflections Competitions.  Here is a look at all the place winners from the Western Region PTA competition.

Enjoy the weekend and we’ll see you next week!
