01-27-21 Micro-Cluster and Athletics Update
January 27, 2021
Dear Williamsville Central School District Families,
Earlier today, Governor Cuomo announced the Orange and Yellow Zone Micro-Cluster designations have been lifted for Western New York. Based on this new information, the District is reviewing the requirement to conduct random COVID-19 testing.
On Monday, the Erie County Department of Health and Section VI Athletics approved the resumption of high-risk sports beginning on Monday, February 1, 2021. Updated guidance for sports from the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) is available here: Interim Guidance for Sports and Recreation During the COVID-19 Public Health Emergency. Updated guidance from Section VI is also available on our website on our COVID-19 Education page.
In addition to this guidance, in a memo, the Erie County Department of Health has stated that “for moderate and higher-risk sports, if an athlete or coach has a positive COVID-19 diagnostic test, all in-person team or group activities (e.g., practices, scrimmages, games, meetings) will be cancelled for a 10-day period.”
Here is the revised sports schedule for Winter, Fall II, and Spring sports.
- Winter – February 1, 2021 – March 27, 2021: Basketball, Ice Hockey, Wrestling
- Fall II – March 22, 2021 – May 15, 2021: Football, Volleyball, Cheer
- Spring – May 10, 2021 – June 30, 2021: All Spring Sports
Sign-ups for Winter sports will be available on WITS by Thursday afternoon. In addition to this, the athletic eligibility and health screening questionnaire need to be completed and electronically submitted prior to any students participating in athletic activities. All student-athletes and their parent(s)/legal guardian(s) will be required to sign the appropriate waivers, including the District’s Student Athletics COVID-19 Participation Waiver.
We need everyone to do their part to follow the health and safety guidelines that are in place, which include continuing to fill out the daily COVID-19 health screening questionnaire, to help keep our school and sporting environments as healthy and safe as possible.
We understand there is a short turnaround for sign-ups, tryouts, and the start of the season. Thank you for patience and understanding as we work through this process together.
It is important to note there will be NO SPECTATORS allowed for the 2021 Winter Season. This is a direct mandate from Section VI Athletics. In the fall, the District established YouTube channels for Williamsville East, Williamsville North, and Williamsville South to stream varsity athletic events. Each school will establish a streaming schedule and provide that to families through WITSMail, social media, and in the weekly newsletter. The YouTube channels can be accessed here:
We also understand that with the resumption of high-risk sports, it raises additional questions for events involving band, orchestra, chorus, and other extra-curricular activities that are subject to heightened health and safety guidelines from the NYSDOH and the New York State Department of Education. We have reached out to the NYSDOH to inquire if there are any additional updates to these health and safety guidelines. If we receive any additional updates, we will share them with you as quickly as possible.
Thank you for your patience as we continue to monitor and process updated guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic. We will continue to share information with you as it becomes available.
Dr. John E. McKenna
Acting Superintendent of Schools
